Morningstar Farms Recalls Meat Alternatives Over Plastic Contamination

Plastic fragments have forced a recall of specific Morningstar Farms Buffalo Chik’n Nuggets and Hot & Spicy Sausage Patties, prompting safety concerns for consumers. The affected products, now under the Mars Inc. umbrella following the acquisition of Kellanova, were flagged for potential physical contamination in the manufacturing process.

The recall focuses on two distinct product lines with specific expiration windows. For the Buffalo Chik'n Nuggets, consumers should check for UPC code 000 28989 10110 5, specifically those marked with 'Better If Used Before' dates of July 7 and July 8, 2027. The Hot & Spicy Sausage Patties, bearing UPC 000 28989 10094 8, include items dated July 5, July 6, and July 7, 2027.

Morningstar currently holds the leading position in the U.S. retail market for meal alternatives, outpacing competitors like Impossible Foods according to data from Circana. This safety alert follows a period of corporate transition for the brand, which became a subsidiary of Mars Inc. last December as part of a $36 billion deal. Despite the recall, the company continues to expand its footprint in the foodservice sector, recently debuting Royal Thai Curry Patties for institutional and Away From Home channels.
