Australia and Canada Finalize $1.75 Billion Arctic Radar Pact

Canada has secured a $1.75 billion deal for Australia’s cutting-edge over-the-horizon radar technology, a move designed to bolster North American defense against low-flying missile threats. The agreement represents Australia’s largest-ever defense export and marks the first time this high-frequency system has been sold to an international partner.

Australia and Canada Finalize $1.75 Billion Arctic Radar Pact

The project centers on an advanced capability that refracts electromagnetic waves off the ionosphere, allowing Canadian forces to track objects thousands of kilometers away that remain hidden from conventional radar due to the Earth's curvature. This initiative serves as a cornerstone of Canada’s broader effort to modernize the North American Aerospace Defense Command, addressing long-standing concerns regarding the country's military readiness.

Work on the program is set to commence on July 1 through industry partner BAE Systems. Canadian officials anticipate achieving initial operational capability by December 2029. Beyond the immediate hardware acquisition, the deal solidifies a strategic alignment between the two nations, building upon their existing cooperation within the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance to address shifting security challenges in the Arctic.
