3M Debuts AI Assistant to Streamline Industrial Technical Support

St. Paul-based manufacturing giant 3M has launched Ask 3M, an AI-driven digital assistant designed to provide industrial customers with instant, self-service access to technical expertise. Accessible via a dedicated portal, the tool aims to reduce product discovery timelines by grounding its responses in verified corporate documentation and engineering data.

The platform functions as a conversational interface that allows users to input plain-language queries regarding material selection and application hurdles. Unlike general-purpose AI models, Ask 3M draws exclusively from the company’s 49 technology platforms to ensure technical accuracy. While the initial rollout focuses on industrial adhesives and tapes, the company intends to broaden the tool’s scope to include additional product categories in the coming months.

During its development, the system was stress-tested by production engineers tasked with complex assembly challenges, such as bonding polypropylene to insulation foam. According to Chris Goralski, President of 3M’s Safety and Industrial Business Group, the tool serves to eliminate the bottlenecks associated with traditional communication channels like site visits or prolonged email chains. By linking product recommendations directly to authorized distributors and providing downloadable source documentation, the assistant seeks to shift technical consultation toward a more autonomous, user-directed model.
