Preeclampsia Foundation Opens Grant Cycle to End Pre-term Births

Lauren and Clement Pappas have launched a new round of research funding aimed at eliminating pre-term deliveries caused by preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome. The couple, who lost their son Peter Joseph after a 29-week delivery, are backing a $200,000 initiative to advance maternal health outcomes by 2050.

The Preeclampsia Foundation is now accepting Letters of Intent for the Peter Joseph Pappas Research Grants. This program provides up to $200,000 in two-year funding for studies that address critical gaps in understanding hypertensive pregnancy disorders. Applicants are encouraged to explore pathophysiological pathways, predictive diagnostics, and new therapeutic interventions that could prevent organ dysfunction in expectant mothers.

Preference will be given to research utilizing or contributing to the Preeclampsia Registry, which houses clinical and genetic data. The foundation specifically points to research priorities established during a 2020 workshop with the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine. Interested researchers must submit their proposals by 5:00 pm ET on August 14, 2026, to be considered for the current cycle.
