UPS Commits $48 Million to Global Cold-Chain Expansion

United Parcel Service is pouring $48 million into the construction of 27 temperature-controlled freight cross-dock facilities spanning Europe, Asia, and the Americas. This infrastructure push targets the surging global demand for specialized logistics capable of handling sensitive medical therapies that require precise thermal regulation to remain effective during transit.

The expansion addresses the growing complexity of healthcare supply chains, which are increasingly dominated by cell and gene treatments, mRNA platforms, and GLP-1 injectables. These medical products demand rigorous environmental controls, often requiring storage within narrow ranges from 2 to 8 degrees Celsius or sustained freezing conditions. By establishing these localized nodes, the company aims to secure its end-to-end cold-chain capabilities.

Kate Gutmann, president of international healthcare and supply chain solutions, noted that these facilities align with the specific technical requirements of their healthcare clients. This project builds upon previous strategic growth efforts, including the acquisitions of the Bomi Group in Europe and the Andlauer Healthcare Group in North America, as the logistics giant seeks to entrench itself further in the high-stakes pharmaceutical distribution market.
