NSC Forecasts 410 Traffic Deaths Over Independence Day Weekend

An estimated 410 people could lose their lives in motor vehicle crashes during the upcoming Fourth of July holiday period, according to new projections from the National Safety Council. The data covers the window from 6 p.m. Thursday, July 2, through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, July 5, as Americans travel for the nation’s 250th anniversary.

The Council emphasizes that these fatalities are preventable, noting that universal seat belt use could save an additional 100 lives during the three-day span. Last year, alcohol-impaired drivers were involved in 38% of fatal crashes during the holiday, a statistic that underscores the critical need for designated drivers and careful trip planning.

Lorraine Martin, CEO of the National Safety Council, urged travelers to prioritize sobriety, speed compliance, and focus behind the wheel. Beyond these core precautions, the organization advises drivers to avoid cell phone distractions, address vehicle safety recalls, and remain vigilant against the risks of heat-related dangers for passengers and pets left in stationary cars. The group continues to advocate for its Road to Zero initiative, a long-term campaign aimed at eliminating roadway deaths through systemic safety improvements and individual responsibility.
