Canada approves Boey, a rapid-acting neurotoxin for frown lines

Health Canada has authorized the use of Boey, a new injectable neurotoxin from Allergan Aesthetics designed to smooth glabellar lines. The treatment is the first of its kind to utilize serotype E, offering patients a rapid onset of effect followed by a short duration, providing a temporary alternative to long-term cosmetic commitments.

The approval positions Boey as a distinct option in the aesthetic market, specifically targeting individuals hesitant to commit to the lasting results associated with traditional botulinum products. According to clinical data, the treatment takes effect as early as eight hours after injection, with effects typically fading within two to three weeks. This profile addresses findings from a recent company survey, which indicated that nearly 80% of respondents wish they could preview the outcome of an aesthetic procedure before committing to a long-term change.

Regulatory clearance follows two Phase 3 clinical trials that evaluated 947 patients for safety and efficacy. While the product marks a shift in how practitioners can tailor treatments to individual goals, Allergan Aesthetics emphasizes that it is not intended to replace existing standards like BOTOX Cosmetic, which remains the only neurotoxin clinically tested for use following a Boey treatment. The company is currently preparing for a commercial launch in Canada, with similar regulatory reviews for the product underway in other global markets.
