AI Tools and Skill Gaps Force Companies to Rethink Entry-Level Hiring

Nearly one-quarter of U.S. hiring managers plan to reduce or eliminate entry-level roles for the college class of 2026, as businesses increasingly pivot toward artificial intelligence to handle junior tasks. The shift reflects a growing corporate preference for AI-augmented senior staff over the intensive training required for recent graduates.

A survey of 1,000 hiring managers by ResumeTemplates.com reveals a structural transformation in the workplace: 45% of companies have already reorganized departments so that a single senior employee utilizing AI performs the work previously handled by multiple entry-level hires. For 20% of these firms, this efficiency model now replaces three or more junior positions.

Beyond technological adoption, hiring managers cite significant gaps in basic professional readiness. Approximately 76% of respondents report that new graduates struggle to interpret routine work documents, while 41% state that recent hires lack the ability to draft professional emails. Behavioral concerns further complicate recruitment, with 69% of managers identifying issues related to work ethic, professionalism, or motivation. Consequently, only 17% of managers express full trust in recent graduates when handling customer-facing responsibilities or independent decision-making.
