Visión y Compromiso Launches Mobile Health Units in Los Angeles

A new initiative named MOVES is hitting the streets of Los Angeles County to bridge persistent gaps in healthcare access. Backed by a $1.8 million grant from the Centene Foundation and Health Net, the program deploys specialized mobile units staffed by promotoras to reach 10,000 underserved Medi-Cal beneficiaries.

The MOVES—Mobile Outreach for Vulnerable and Engaged Support—program shifts the traditional care model by bringing medical screenings, chronic disease management, and social service navigation directly into local neighborhoods. Rather than requiring patients to navigate complex bureaucratic systems, the initiative utilizes promotoras, registered nurses, and community coordinators to provide on-site support ranging from housing navigation to behavioral health referrals.

Maria Lemus, executive director of Visión y Compromiso, noted that the strategy centers on meeting residents where they live and work. The three-year project aligns with the California Department of Health Care Services' broader goals to reduce health disparities and build sustainable community trust. By partnering with local schools, faith-based organizations, and clinics, the program aims to establish a more responsive, human-centered network that addresses both medical needs and social determinants of health.
