Innovative Molecules Enters Phase 2a Trials for Adibelivir

Munich-based Innovative Molecules has dosed the first patient in its Phase 2a trial of adibelivir, a novel oral treatment for recurrent genital herpes. This milestone shifts the company’s lead program into proof-of-concept development, marking a pivotal transition toward late-stage clinical evaluation for the biotechnology firm.

The Phase 2a study investigates the safety, pharmacokinetics, and clinical efficacy of adibelivir, a helicase-primase inhibitor that disrupts herpes simplex virus replication. Unlike traditional nucleoside analogues, this compound utilizes a distinct mechanism to suppress viral activity. CEO Florian Vogel noted that the trial represents a significant step in delivering transformative therapies for patients suffering from persistent herpes-associated conditions.

Beyond the current HSV program, the company is diversifying its virology portfolio by developing a new candidate targeting the Epstein-Barr virus. This second program is moving through IND-enabling activities, a move Joachim Rothe, Chairman of the company's advisory board, described as positioning the firm as a leader in next-generation herpesvirus research.
