Consumers Energy Opens $11 Million in Relief for Michigan Households

With summer temperatures climbing and utility costs straining household budgets, Consumers Energy is directing customers toward nearly $11 million in available financial aid. The funds aim to stabilize accounts for residents struggling with past-due energy bills as the state faces ongoing inflationary pressures on essential services.

State Emergency Relief programs remain the primary vehicle for this support, offering up to $600 per commodity for electric and natural gas bills. Households earning 150% or less of the federal poverty level are eligible to apply for these one-time, federally backed grants. Beyond state-run channels, the Michigan Energy Assistance Program provides additional pathways to relief through local community nonprofits, accessible by dialing 2-1-1 for coordinated aid spanning energy, food, and housing needs.

Victoria Rombach, manager of energy assistance policy at Consumers Energy, emphasized that securing reliable service remains a critical goal for the utility. Last year, the impact of these initiatives was significant: 59,000 customers secured $25.97 million in relief, contributing to a broader effort that assisted 141,000 families statewide. Residents are encouraged to review eligibility requirements and specific program offerings at the company's online resource portal.
