Convoy of Hope Deploys to Venezuela After Rare Seismic Doublet

A rare seismic doublet struck Venezuela last night, triggering back-to-back earthquakes of 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude that left at least 180 people dead and 1,500 injured. With infrastructure across Caracas crippled and rescue teams digging through debris, the death toll is expected to climb as the country enters a state of emergency.

Acting President Delcy Rodríguez declared a national state of emergency as the country grapples with the fallout of the most powerful tremors to hit the region in over a century. Seismologists describe the event as a seismic doublet, a phenomenon where two major quakes occur nearly simultaneously, compounding the structural collapse and complicating search and rescue efforts.

Convoy of Hope teams are already on the ground, deploying mobile kitchens to provide hot meals, clean water, and essential supplies to survivors. Ethan Forhetz, the organization’s national spokesperson, described the situation as an unthinkable tragedy. As local responders work around the clock to reach those still trapped, the relief group has committed to a long-term presence to support the recovery of affected communities.
