MetaOptics Ships Metalens Evaluation Units to Global Electronics Giants

Singapore-based MetaOptics has begun distributing evaluation units of its metalens-integrated 5G smartphones and AI-powered smart glasses to manufacturers across Europe, Japan, and the Philippines, marking a critical transition from prototype demonstrations to potential mass-market integration for its ultra-thin optical technology.

The company’s glass-based metalenses replace traditional multi-element lens stacks with a single, ultra-thin optical layer. This shift allows for significantly thinner hardware and improved heat resistance. MetaOptics utilizes both 4-inch and 12-inch semiconductor platforms to produce these modules, aiming to move beyond niche applications into consumer-grade smartphones and AR/VR wearables.

Executive Chairman Thng Chong Kim framed the rollout as a pivotal step toward broad commercial adoption. The evaluation units include a 5G smartphone featuring a bump-free back cover and a touch-free 3D biometric fingerprint sensor powered by the Qualcomm Dragonwing QCM6490. Simultaneously, the company is testing AI smart glasses built on the Qualcomm AR1 Snapdragon platform, which utilize a compact color metalens camera to enable gesture-based controls.

Following a positive reception at CES 2026, MetaOptics is now focusing on direct feedback from manufacturers to refine its production-ready modules. The company has already finalized the design for a 12MP color metalens camera, with plans to unveil the updated technology at CES 2027.
