McDonald’s and Starbucks Dominate AI Rankings as Fast-Casual Slumps

The era of fast-casual dominance is fading, according to the 2026 US Restaurants & Chains AI Visibility Index by 5WPR. By analyzing how major AI platforms like ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews cite industry leaders, the report reveals that traditional giants and specialized concepts are now outpacing the once-thriving fast-casual sector.

The report ranks the top 25 restaurant chains based on their prominence in AI-generated consumer responses across platforms including Claude and Perplexity. McDonald’s, Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, Chipotle, and Cava currently command the highest visibility. These rankings reflect a shift in market momentum that mirrors real-world financial performance, where AI citation patterns have historically preceded business trends by 12 to 18 months.

While fast-casual brands like Panera and Sweetgreen have faced recent same-store sales declines, specialized chains and established giants are capturing the growth. In 2025, 45% of all new US restaurant openings originated from just five brands, including Wingstop and Cava, while McDonald’s expanded its physical footprint at its fastest rate since 2002. Ronn Torossian, founder and chairman of 5W, noted that AI citation has emerged as a critical third pillar of restaurant marketing, sitting alongside local search and loyalty apps. Companies that fail to secure their presence within generative AI ecosystems risk losing significant competitive ground as these platforms increasingly dictate consumer choices.
