US Education Department Eases Student Loan Access for Graduate Nursing

Graduate nursing students gained a temporary reprieve today as the U.S. Department of Education issued interim guidance classifying their studies as professional degree programs. The shift comes directly from a court-ordered stay in the ongoing litigation between the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and federal regulators regarding student loan eligibility.

The directive, stemming from the case AANP v. McMahon, ensures that nursing students maintain access to federal financial aid while the legal challenge against the Department's professional degree rule plays out. Officials confirmed the guidance will remain active for the duration of the court proceedings, providing a crucial bridge for those currently enrolled in advanced practice programs.

Valerie Fuller, president of the AANP, praised the move as a necessary safeguard for the future health care workforce. She noted that removing financial barriers is essential to meeting the national demand for nurse practitioners. The association continues to push for a permanent resolution that would solidify these loan protections, aiming to eliminate the uncertainty that has clouded advanced nursing education during the legal dispute.
