The surge in green power comes despite a 7.7% decline in hydropower output caused by reduced rainfall. Gains were instead driven by a robust expansion in solar and wind capacity, with 8.3 GW of new solar and 2.5 GW of onshore wind capacity coming online in the first six months of the year. Industry associations ZSW and BDEW noted that this growth is essential to meeting the government's target of 80% renewable electricity by 2030.
Wind energy has proven particularly pivotal, with generation jumping by 27% in the first quarter alone due to improved wind speeds and a larger turbine fleet. Dr. Norbert Allnoch, chief executive of the International Economic Forum for Renewable Energies, noted that this influx of wind energy has stabilized the electricity market and mitigated the need for expensive gas-fired generation. Despite these gains, industry bodies are calling for further legislative reforms to streamline permitting processes and provide greater long-term security for energy investors.
