Kentucky American Water Urges Conservation Amid Heat Wave

As an unrelenting heat wave grips Kentucky, local utility provider Kentucky American Water is pressing residents to curb consumption. With peak temperatures driving up demand, the company warns that simple lifestyle adjustments—ranging from lawn care modifications to leak detection—are critical to managing household utility costs during the sweltering summer months.

Evaporation claims nearly 30 percent of water used during midday hours. To combat this, the utility recommends scheduling irrigation for early mornings or late evenings when temperatures are lower. Homeowners can further reduce waste by installing rain barrels, adjusting sprinkler heads to avoid watering paved surfaces, and using brooms instead of hoses to clean exterior areas.

Lawn and garden health also plays a role in overall efficiency. Applying a two-to-three-inch layer of mulch helps garden beds retain moisture, while raising mower blades to a height of 2.5 to 3.5 inches encourages more drought-resistant grass. Beyond outdoor habits, indoor maintenance remains a priority; roughly 10 percent of homes harbor leaks that collectively waste upwards of 90 gallons of water daily. Customers can track their consumption patterns and explore assistance programs through the company’s MyWater portal.
