Teamsters Accuse Dairy Farmers of America of Retaliatory Plant Closure

The Dairy Farmers of America is shuttering its processing plant and creamery in St. Albans, Vermont, prompting the Teamsters to label the move a calculated act of retaliation. The union, which represents workers at the site, claims the closure follows a contentious contract strike last year.

Jesse Case, director of the Teamsters Food Processing Division, argues the shutdown serves a larger corporate strategy to consolidate market power. By tightening control over processing, transportation, and supply chains, the company has effectively squeezed out independent alternatives for local farmers and stripped away unionized roles in rural communities.

According to the union, this consolidation creates an environment where a single entity dictates industry terms, leaving workers and small-town economies to bear the financial burden. The Teamsters are currently reviewing the closure and have pledged to challenge what they characterize as anti-competitive and anti-worker behavior. The organization maintains that the company profited from the regional dairy economy only to abandon its infrastructure once the workforce became a perceived obstacle.
