American Parkinson Disease Association Launches Mental Health Training

Mental health practitioners will soon gain access to a specialized curriculum focused on the emotional complexities of Parkinson’s disease. The American Parkinson Disease Association is rolling out a free, five-part series starting July 22, 2026, aimed at equipping clinicians with the tools to better support patients and their caregivers.

The program, titled Bridging Mental Health and Parkinson's Care, addresses a critical gap in clinical practice where physical symptoms often eclipse the psychological toll of the disorder. Each session offers one continuing education credit, providing a pathway for professionals to sharpen their approach to depression, anxiety, and the specific challenges faced by family caregivers.

Beginning July 22, the series features expert-led modules covering disease progression, psychosocial impacts, and cultural considerations. Presenters include Dr. Melita Petrossian, Gloria Lebeaux, and Dr. Natalie Diaz, among others. The curriculum concludes on November 18, 2026, with a final session dedicated to navigating grief and ambiguous loss. By providing these resources at no cost, the association intends to foster a more informed support network for the approximately one million people living with Parkinson's in the United States.
