Forbes Overtakes The New York Times in AI Visibility Index

The traditional hierarchy of American media is undergoing a radical shift as AI answer engines redefine reach. According to the 2026 5W AI-Friendly Publications Index, Forbes currently leads the industry with a score of 98, while prestige outlets like The New York Times and Wall Street Journal trail behind due to restrictive paywalls.

The index evaluates how frequently platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, and Google AI Overviews cite the 50 largest U.S. publications. While brand equity once dictated media influence, the new digital landscape favors structural accessibility. Forbes secured the top spot by utilizing a contributor network and aggressive schema, whereas The New York Times, despite its reputation, ranks third with 88 points. The study highlights a clear divide: publications that gate their content behind logins are systematically penalized by AI crawlers.

Wire services and syndication-heavy outlets are currently outperforming legacy consumer titles. Reuters ranks second with 91, and the Associated Press holds 82. Even PR Newswire, with a score of 64, ranks higher than many established consumer magazines. Notable titles such as Fast Company and Harvard Business Review struggle significantly, scoring 36 and 51 respectively. Ronn Torossian, founder of 5W AI Communications, noted that while The Times remains a premier newspaper, Forbes functions more effectively as an answer source for AI models. Ultimately, the most cited sources in the AI ecosystem are often non-traditional entities like Wikipedia, Reddit, and government domains, which do not operate under conventional media paywalls.
