Indonesia Secures Russian Crude to Bridge Supply Gap

A tanker carrying 770,000 barrels of Russian crude docked at Balikpapan in late June, marking the first delivery under a bilateral agreement finalized in April. This shift arrives as Indonesia seeks to decouple its energy imports from the volatile Middle East market following disruptions near the Strait of Hormuz.

Indonesia Secures Russian Crude to Bridge Supply Gap

The Southeast Asian nation produces approximately 600,000 barrels per day but faces a daily consumption deficit, requiring imports to bridge the gap toward its 1.6 million barrel demand. Faced with regional instability, the government has pivoted toward Russia to ensure consistent refinery throughput. Rystad Energy analyst Prateek Panday noted that this strategy rests on refinery compatibility and long-term energy security rather than temporary market fluctuations.

Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia confirmed that the state has secured supply commitments through December. Deputy Minister Yuliot Tanjung previously estimated that total imports from Russia could reach 150 million barrels this year. Officials are now focusing on domestic refinery upgrades to process the incoming crude, aiming to stabilize the national energy grid against future external supply shocks.
