Washington Trust Expands to Bristol with 30th Branch

Bristol’s historic streets are set to welcome a new financial neighbor as The Washington Trust Company prepares to open its 30th branch at 590 Metacom Ave. later this year. The expansion marks a strategic push into the East Bay region for the nation’s oldest community bank.

The upcoming location promises a full suite of services, ranging from personal and business banking to mortgage lending and wealth management. By planting a flag in Bristol, the Westerly-based institution aims to bolster its footprint in southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, offering local decision-making to a new customer base.

Chairman and CEO Ned Handy noted that the new branch represents a commitment to integrating the bank into the fabric of the community. The move aligns with the bank’s own long-standing history; established in 1800, Washington Trust has operated for over two centuries, a tenure that complements Bristol’s own legacy as the site of the nation’s oldest continuous Fourth of July celebration.
