The latest industry data, covering more than 110 operators representing 85% of global connections, highlights a decoupling of growth from environmental impact. Last year alone, operational emissions dropped by 5% as companies increasingly turned to green power. Operators purchased or generated 70 TWh of renewable electricity in 2024—a volume matching the total renewable output of Indonesia. The share of electricity sourced directly from renewables has climbed to 24%, doubling the 10% recorded five years ago.

John Giusti, Chief Regulatory Officer at the GSMA, noted that while the industry is successfully balancing digital expansion with climate goals, the pace of decarbonization remains tethered to energy infrastructure. The report calls on policymakers to modernize electricity markets, simplify permitting for clean energy projects, and foster environments that invite investment in grid stability. Without these structural shifts, particularly in emerging markets, the industry risks stalling on its path to total carbon neutrality by mid-century.
