The S&P Global Energy Tier 1 Cleantech Companies list for 2026 evaluates firms based on a rigorous methodology that extends beyond simple market share. Unlike traditional industry rankings, the assessment incorporates proprietary data on global shipments, manufacturing diversification, and financial health. Notably, this classification is the first in the sector to integrate sustainability metrics as a core requirement for inclusion. Selection for the list is derived from the top 30 global companies within five distinct technology categories, including solar PV modules and energy storage.

Colin Parkin, CEO of Canadian Solar, noted that the designation serves as a vital signal for stakeholders seeking proven reliability. With a track record spanning 25 years, the company has delivered approximately 177 GW of solar modules worldwide. Its subsidiary, e-STORAGE, continues to expand its footprint, reporting over 20 GWh in battery storage shipments and a contracted backlog valued at $3.5 billion as of early May 2026. By balancing utility-scale project development with equipment manufacturing, the Kitchener-based firm maintains a diversified pipeline currently encompassing 24 GWp of solar and 81 GWh of storage capacity.
