Anomet Products Cuts Production Costs With Precious Metal Clad Wire

Engineers at Massachusetts-based Anomet Products have developed a composite clad wire designed to replace solid gold, silver, and platinum components at a fraction of their traditional market price. By metallurgically bonding precious metals to lower-cost cores, the firm claims it can reduce material expenses by as much as 90 percent.

The new wire line utilizes a core of stainless steel, copper, nickel-iron, molybdenum, tantalum, or titanium, shielded by a precious metal layer at least 2% of the total thickness. This construction maintains the performance characteristics of solid wire—such as high conductivity, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility—while significantly lowering the barrier to entry for high-reliability components.

Targeting industries that demand precise material properties, the wire is suitable for medical connectors and micro-switches. The company reports that its metallurgical bonding process results in a smoother finish and higher ductility than standard plated or filled alternatives. The product is currently available in diameters ranging from 0.002 to 0.125 inches, with ribbon configurations offered up to one inch wide.
