Cypress Creek and Google Break Ground on Nation’s Largest Solar Project

In Mississippi County, Arkansas, construction has officially commenced on the Steel River Energy Center. This massive infrastructure undertaking, a partnership between Cypress Creek Energy and Google, aims to deliver 2.5 gigawatts of solar generation and 2.9 gigawatt-hours of battery storage, setting a new benchmark for domestic renewable energy development.

The project is unfolding in three distinct phases, with the first two expected to provide 1.6 gigawatts of solar capacity and 1.9 gigawatt-hours of battery storage to the regional grid. Once fully operational by 2029, the facility will generate enough electricity to power more than 315,000 Arkansas homes annually. Google has secured energy from these initial phases through a power purchase agreement, marking its largest solar and storage investment globally to date.

Beyond power generation, the project serves as a cornerstone for American industrial manufacturing. Located in a region renowned for steel production, the site utilizes over 142,000 tons of steel coils from the local Big River Steel facility. The infrastructure features 400,000 domestically manufactured steel piles and solar trackers, alongside U.S.-made solar modules from First Solar and battery systems from LG Energy Solution Vertech.

The development is projected to create 700 construction jobs per phase, with an anticipated $300 million in local tax revenue over its lifespan. Demonstrating a focus on regional growth, Cypress Creek and Google have pledged a combined $8 million toward community investment funds. These resources are earmarked for energy affordability initiatives, school district support, and local infrastructure projects, such as a new playground for the Rivercrest School District. By integrating local manufacturing with large-scale utility needs, the Steel River Energy Center stands as a significant industrial expansion for the state of Arkansas.
