Altesa BioSciences Taps Respiratory Expert Brett Haumann as CEO

Altesa BioSciences has appointed veteran pharmaceutical leader Dr. Brett Haumann as its new Chief Executive Officer. The transition comes as the Atlanta-based company accelerates clinical development for its lead asset, vapendavir, following a successful $75 million Series B funding round and the launch of the Phase 2b CARDINAL study.

Dr. Haumann, who previously held a seat on the Altesa Board, brings three decades of experience in respiratory medicine and anti-infectives. His career includes senior leadership roles at RIGImmune, Circassia, and Theravance Biopharma, alongside extensive drug development work at GSK. This background aligns with the company’s current push to address rhinovirus-driven exacerbations in patients suffering from COPD.

Board Chair Moncef Slaoui, who worked with Haumann during their time at GSK, noted that the incoming CEO’s operational track record is essential for the company's next phase. Altesa is currently enrolling 900 participants across the U.S. and U.K. for its CARDINAL trial, a randomized, placebo-controlled study designed to evaluate the efficacy of oral vapendavir in real-world clinical models. The trial focuses on patient-reported outcomes, lung function, and the reduction of healthcare resource utilization, marking a significant step toward potential commercialization for the therapy.
