Generic Drugmakers Face Tariff Shock as White House Demands Reshoring

President Trump’s pledge to impose 100% tariffs on imported generic medicines by August 2028 has triggered a sharp sell-off in healthcare stocks. The proposed levies, which are slated to double to 200% after one year, aim to force pharmaceutical manufacturing back to U.S. soil within a two-year transition window.

Generic Drugmakers Face Tariff Shock as White House Demands Reshoring

Global drugmakers are now navigating a period of acute regulatory uncertainty. The Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance, representing a significant portion of the generic supply chain, warned that punitive tariffs alone are insufficient to trigger a domestic manufacturing revival. The trade group argues that broad structural reforms are required to make U.S. production a viable alternative to existing international hubs.

Sandoz Group, the Swiss generic giant, acknowledged the announcement but remains in a holding pattern. Management stated they would open a dialogue with U.S. policymakers while cautioning that the plan’s scope remains too ill-defined to adjust current investment strategies. Until the White House clarifies the implementation mechanics, the industry faces mounting pressure from both investors and a shifting trade landscape.
