Westfield’s Historic Rialto Theater Secures $43 Million State Grant

The New Jersey Economic Development Authority has greenlit a $43,381,250 tax credit for the Rialto Center for Creativity, providing the critical capital needed to overhaul the historic site. This state injection serves as the catalyst for a new $10 million fundraising drive aimed at finalizing construction by 2029.

The Cultural Arts Facilities Expansion (CAFE) award marks a turning point for the downtown Westfield project, which seeks to convert the landmark theater into a multi-use cultural hub. While the state grant covers a substantial portion of the development, the Rialto Board of Trustees is now turning to private donors, foundations, and corporate partners to bridge the remaining $10 million gap required for construction and initial operations.

Construction is slated to begin in 2027, with the facility designed to house a 450-seat performance venue, art galleries, and dedicated studio spaces for community workshops. According to Board President Bill Crandall, the project aims to evolve beyond a simple theater into a permanent home for local arts and education. The organization is currently soliciting contributions and naming-rights agreements to ensure the center remains sustainable upon its 2029 opening.
