Turquoise Hill Investors Reach $22.6 Million Settlement in Canada

Investors who acquired Turquoise Hill Resources securities between July 31, 2018, and July 31, 2019, may be eligible for compensation under a proposed CAD $22.6 million class action settlement. The agreement, awaiting approval by the Superior Court of Québec, resolves claims against the company, Rio Tinto, and several individual executives.

The settlement follows allegations regarding the company's disclosures during the specified period. While the respondents, including Turquoise Hill and Rio Tinto, continue to deny any wrongdoing or liability, they have agreed to the payout to avoid the ongoing costs and uncertainty of a protracted trial. The proposed settlement covers individuals and entities who purchased securities in non-U.S. transactions and held them past mid-2019.

Class members have until September 1, 2026, to opt out of the action if they wish to pursue independent legal proceedings. Those who remain in the class do not need to take immediate action, though they must submit a claim form to receive a portion of the net funds if the court approves the deal on October 20, 2026. Legal counsel estimates that after administrative costs and fees, approximately $13.6 million to $13.8 million will be available for distribution to eligible claimants on a pro rata basis.
