Magellan Aerospace and Saab Eye Gripen Production in Canada

A potential shift in Canada’s aerial defense strategy has sparked a new industrial partnership, as Magellan Aerospace signed a memorandum of understanding with Sweden’s Saab. The agreement aims to localize manufacturing of the JAS 39 Gripen fighter jet should the Canadian government select the aircraft for its future fleet.

The Saab JAS 39 Gripen, a multi-role, single-engine fighter, is explicitly designed to neutralize sophisticated modern threats. Under this nascent agreement, the two companies will evaluate specific industrial cooperation, targeting high-tech manufacturing sectors within Canada. Magellan is positioned to handle complex structural components, including composite wing skins, alongside engineering and production tasks for external fuel tanks.

This collaboration leverages Magellan’s global footprint, which spans North America, Europe, and India, to provide the necessary industrial infrastructure. By aligning with a domestic supplier, Saab aims to bolster its bid for the Royal Canadian Air Force contract, demonstrating a commitment to local industrial participation should their platform be chosen.
