The agreement, finalized on July 29, marks a significant shift for HD Hyundai as it pivots toward exporting integrated shipyard construction solutions. Under the pact, the companies will overhaul operations at the Fraser Shipyards facility on Lake Superior. This site serves as a pilot program to test advanced layout designs, robotics deployment, and data management systems, with plans to formalize a consulting contract before the end of the year.

By leveraging the Great Lakes region’s historical maritime supply chain, the partnership seeks to align with the U.S. government’s Maritime Prosperity Zones initiative. Kim Hyung-kwan, CEO of HD Korea Shipbuilding, emphasized that the firm will transfer its proprietary operational know-how to help Fraser Shipyards evolve into a central hub for domestic vessel production. This initiative represents the first major project for the Korean firm since it expanded its corporate objectives to include the development of comprehensive digital engineering platforms.
