Nuclearn Deploys AI to Streamline Nuclear Plant Alarm Diagnostics

Nuclear utilities face a dual challenge: rising alarm fatigue and the loss of institutional knowledge as senior engineers retire. To bridge this gap, Phoenix-based Nuclearn has launched Equipment AI, a platform that synchronizes real-time sensor data with decades of maintenance logs and design documentation to accelerate equipment troubleshooting.

Nuclear power plants monitor thousands of individual components, often generating a constant stream of low-level notifications. Distinguishing between nuisance alarms and genuine mechanical failures requires cross-referencing sensor trends with complex plant histories, which are typically siloed across disconnected systems. Nuclearn’s new software integrates these disparate data points—including plant historian (PI) data, work orders, and condition reports—into a single, source-grounded workflow.

CEO Brad Fox notes that the tool aims to put historical plant experience directly in front of engineers at the moment a problem arises. By reasoning across both time-series data and unstructured records, the system provides a comprehensive diagnostic picture rather than isolated charts. Lorenzo Slay, Vice President of Product at Nuclearn, emphasizes that the platform captures the context behind alarms, which is often buried in procedures or reports written years prior. The system is currently live at several nuclear facilities, and the company reports measurable improvements in both alarm response and diagnostic speed.
