Arbe’s 4D Radar to Power VirtuRail Underground Construction Vehicles

Tunnels filled with smoke, dust, and darkness pose a persistent challenge for standard automated machinery. To bridge this safety gap, VirtuRail is integrating Sensrad’s 4D imaging radar—powered by Arbe Robotics technology—into its fleet of automated service vehicles, moving beyond the limits of traditional camera and LiDAR sensing systems.

The partnership targets the high-risk environments of underground construction, where optical sensors frequently falter. VirtuRail’s rail-less transport systems, which currently rely on vision-based driver assistance, will now incorporate the Hugin D1 4D imaging radar alongside Oden Drive perception software. This addition provides a necessary layer of redundancy, ensuring consistent situational awareness during emergency scenarios like tunnel fires or deep-earth logistics operations.

Ram Machness, CEO of Arbe, noted that the deployment confirms the chipset’s utility in adverse conditions where visibility is severely compromised. By utilizing Arbe’s proprietary radar stack—which features 2,304 virtual channels—the system maintains reliable performance where optical sensors are blinded by environmental interference. This integration marks a shift in how automated heavy machinery navigates complex, non-public infrastructure projects.
