Farmers Insurance seeks California expansion with new rating plan

California small business owners in high-risk wildfire zones may soon find more coverage options as Farmers Insurance files an upgraded rating plan. The proposal, aligned with state regulatory reforms, aims to broaden commercial insurance access while pledging to write 1,500 new policies in distressed areas over two years.

The filing incorporates elements of Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara’s Sustainable Insurance Strategy, targeting sectors ranging from commercial real estate and retail to auto service shops and habitational developments. Eric Coleman, president of business insurance at Farmers, noted that the initiative seeks to integrate the firm’s existing workers' compensation and commercial auto programs into a unified offering for entrepreneurs.

While the expansion promises increased availability, the proposal carries a statewide average rate adjustment of just over 15%. If approved, the new rating structure is slated to take effect on February 1, 2027. Prospective customers must still meet standard underwriting guidelines, and the company is directing interested business owners to local agency representatives for specific policy assessments.
