Pan-Mass Challenge Aims for Record $79 Million in Cancer Research Funds

Nearly 6,500 cyclists and 3,500 volunteers are gathering across Massachusetts this weekend for the 2026 Pan-Mass Challenge. As federal research grants reach historic lows, the annual bike-a-thon aims to secure a record-breaking $79 million for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, reinforcing its status as the world’s largest athletic fundraiser.

For the 20th consecutive year, the event maintains a strict 100 percent pass-through model, ensuring every dollar raised by participants goes directly to Dana-Farber. Since its 1980 inception, the initiative has contributed $1.125 billion to the institute, funding critical advancements like Dr. Brian Wolpin’s work in gastrointestinal oncology. His clinical trials on the gene-targeting drug daraxonrasib recently doubled median survival rates for pancreatic cancer patients, demonstrating the tangible impact of the event’s unrestricted funding.

Participants from 44 states and seven countries are navigating routes ranging from 25 to 177 miles. The field includes the Living Proof community—riders and volunteers currently or previously treated for cancer who embody the event's mission. Founder Billy Starr noted that the current climate of shrinking federal support makes this year’s fundraising effort more vital than ever for fueling the search for a cure.
