Director Yue Ye led a team of over 800 creative professionals to capture the monk’s spiritual evolution and his eventual founding of the Shingon school of Buddhism. The documentary utilizes a blend of archival materials, on-location cinematography across China and Japan, and visual effects to detail how Kūkai transmitted Tang-era medicine, calligraphy, and philosophy to Japanese society. The score, composed by Zou Ye, features the China Philharmonic Orchestra and the China National Opera House.

Following the screening, an audience of academics, museum curators, and film industry figures engaged in a discussion regarding the production’s scope. Notable attendees included LACMA curator Stephen Little and Beverly Hills City Councilmember Mary N. Wells. Having already secured eight international awards and 40 festival selections, the project is scheduled for a series of academic forums and screenings across the U.S. West Coast to further examine the legacy of cross-cultural exchange.
