Non-human identities now dominate production environments

With 91% of identities operating in production environments classified as non-human, security teams face a widening visibility gap. A new report from ClearVector suggests that while organizations have fortified their front doors with authentication tools, they remain blind to the actual behavior of identities once access is granted.

Traditional security models prioritize verifying access, yet they fail to monitor what happens afterward. John Laliberte, CEO of ClearVector, notes that authentication confirms who or what enters, but it offers no insight into whether subsequent actions are legitimate. As automation, AI, and cloud services proliferate, this disconnect leaves organizations vulnerable to attackers who exploit trusted credentials to blend into normal operations.

The report highlights that most non-human activity occurs outside standard business hours, rendering time-based monitoring largely ineffective. Because attackers are increasingly leveraging legitimate credentials to navigate cloud infrastructure, access control alone is no longer a reliable indicator of trust. To counter this, ClearVector advocates for identity intelligence that continuously models the unique 'pattern of life' for every identity. By establishing baselines for human, machine, and AI-driven behavior, security teams can detect deviations in real time and mitigate risks that traditional, static security tools overlook.
