Within three days, he developed bloody diarrhea and severe abdominal pain, eventually testing positive for Shiga toxin-producing E. coli. By November 4, he was diagnosed with hemolytic uremic syndrome and Stage 3 acute kidney injury, necessitating dialysis and a central line.

Public health officials identified 16 cases connected to the fair, with genetic sequencing confirming the boy’s illness matched the outbreak strain. The lawsuit claims the fair failed to provide adequate hand-washing stations, instead relying on hand sanitizer, and failed to warn visitors that livestock, particularly pigs, are known carriers of E. coli O157:H7. The complaint seeks damages for medical expenses that have already topped $453,000, with lifetime costs projected to reach $3 million.

Attorney Ron Simon, who represents the family, stated that the precautions required to prevent such outbreaks are neither expensive nor complex. Following the incident, the Maricopa County Fair canceled its own petting zoo operations for 2026, and the Arizona Legislature is currently considering Senate Bill 1082, which would mandate stricter sanitation and signage protocols for animal contact exhibits.
