US Researchers Develop Nanobots to Harvest Lithium from Seawater

Autonomous, fishlike nanorobots may offer the United States a breakthrough in the race to secure domestic lithium supplies. Backed by a million-dollar Department of Energy grant, researchers at Texas A&M University are testing a method to extract the mineral directly from seawater, bypassing the environmental toll of traditional mining.

China currently exerts significant influence over the global energy transition, controlling one-quarter of global lithium mining and 60 percent of refining capacity. With demand for battery-grade lithium projected to increase tenfold by 2030, the geopolitical pressure on Western supply chains is intensifying. While the United States holds substantial natural deposits in Nevada and Arkansas, conventional extraction methods remain water-intensive and ecologically disruptive.

Jingjing (Jenny) Qiu, the lead researcher at Texas A&M, notes that these micro-scale robots operate with a minimal infrastructure footprint compared to traditional brine pumping or land excavation. The project is part of a broader Department of Energy strategy to fund 19 distinct initiatives aimed at domesticating lithium production. Argonne National Laboratory and the University of Chicago are also exploring a parallel approach, utilizing specialized vermiculite membranes to filter lithium ions. These technologies represent a strategic pivot toward home-grown critical mineral autonomy as Washington seeks to reduce reliance on foreign supply chains.
