NACCO Industries Reports Q2 Loss Amid Solar Asset Impairment

A heavy $12 million impairment charge related to solar development projects pushed NACCO Industries into a net loss for the second quarter of 2026, overshadowing operational gains across the company's core mining and royalty segments. The firm reported a net loss of $1 million, down from a $3.3 million profit last year.

Despite the bottom-line dip, NACCO’s underlying segments demonstrated resilience. Consolidated gross profit climbed 123% to $15.2 million, driven by a 6% increase in revenue. Adjusted EBITDA rose to $15.9 million, a 72% jump compared to the same period in 2025. CEO J.C. Butler noted that while the solar charges hampered consolidated results, the company maintains strong momentum in its primary business lines.

The drag from the ReGen Resources solar portfolio prompted the company to seek alternatives, including potential asset sales or contract amendments. Beyond these charges, the firm faced moderate pressure from lower-than-anticipated earnings in its Minerals and Royalties segment and operational hurdles at a customer's power plant served by Mississippi Lignite Mining Company. Looking ahead, management expects growth to moderate in the second half of 2026, though they remain focused on long-term value through a disciplined, contract-heavy business model.
