Seaspan Breaks Into Chinese Capital Markets With Panda Bond Debut

Seaspan Corporation has become the first international maritime operator to tap China’s domestic bond market, securing 1.5 billion yuan in a private placement. The three-year notes, finalized in mid-July, signal a pivot toward diversified funding as the company looks to scale its fleet of 247 vessels.

The issuance, which carries a 2.50% annual coupon rate, drew significant attention from both onshore and international investors, resulting in a book coverage ratio of 2.3 times. By opening this new channel for unsecured debt, the Singapore-based firm aims to stabilize its capital structure while fueling ongoing investments in its maritime assets, including car carriers and ethane vessels.

Chief Financial Officer Andreas Brauch stated the move reflects investor trust in the company's credit quality and long-term growth strategy. Beyond the immediate liquidity, the transaction deepens Seaspan’s integration into the Chinese maritime ecosystem, where it already maintains extensive partnerships spanning shipbuilding, chartering, and financing services. With a total capacity reaching 2.5 million TEU, the company intends to leverage this cost-efficient access to support its fleet modernization efforts across global shipping lanes.
