Gold and Silver Rally as Surprise Payroll Decline Reshapes Fed Outlook

A surprise loss of 23,000 nonfarm payrolls in July has sent gold and silver prices surging, as the data triggered a retreat in Treasury yields and cooled market expectations for near-term Federal Reserve interest rate hikes.

Spot gold climbed 2.67% to $4,352.60 per ounce, while spot silver jumped 4.20% to $63.970. The labor market miss—which pushed the unemployment rate to 4.1%—immediately lowered the 10-year Treasury yield to 4.60%. Consequently, the implied probability of a September rate hike dropped significantly, falling to 44.0% from 54.7% just before the release. Investors are now re-evaluating whether the Federal Reserve can maintain its hawkish bias in the face of cooling employment data.

Geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz continue to provide a floor for precious metals, maintaining a risk premium as U.S.-Iran negotiations remain deadlocked over maritime control. Meanwhile, the currency landscape is evolving following the first joint U.S.-Japan yen intervention since 1998. While the move aimed to curb the yen's slide to 40-year lows, its impact on the broader dollar index remains uneven, adding another layer of complexity to the cross-asset environment. Global equity markets reflected this uncertainty, with S&P 500 futures gaining 0.5% while Asian indices faced downward pressure.
