USPS Reports Third Quarter Loss as Liquidity Crisis Persists

The U.S. Postal Service narrowed its quarterly losses to $2.5 billion for the period ending June 30, 2026, marking a slight improvement over the $3.1 billion deficit reported a year prior. Despite increased revenue and tighter cost management, the agency warns that its underlying fiscal structure remains fundamentally unstable.

Operating revenue climbed 6.1 percent to $19.9 billion, bolstered by growth in Marketing Mail and the USPS Ground Advantage service. Postmaster General David Steiner credited the performance to internal control measures, including a reduction of 4 million work hours during the quarter. However, these gains were partially countered by rising fuel costs and significant retirement benefit obligations, which continue to strain the organization's limited cash reserves.

Management has turned to temporary measures, such as deferring $1.4 billion in pension payments, to keep operations afloat. Chief Financial Officer Luke Grossmann emphasized that such stopgap solutions cannot replace the systemic legislative and regulatory overhauls required to reach long-term sustainability. Without Congressional action to address the statutory debt limit and modernize pension funding rules, the agency warns that its financial outlook remains dire.
