Senate Confirms Todd Blanche as Attorney General Despite Judicial Rebuke

The U.S. Senate confirmed Todd Blanche as Attorney General in a 50-49 vote, a move immediately condemned by the Government Lawyers Oversight Watchdog (GLOW). The confirmation proceeds despite a federal judge’s recent findings that Blanche engaged in bad-faith litigation and misled Congress while leading the Department of Justice.

The confirmation follows a blistering ruling by U.S. District Judge Kathleen M. Williams, who determined that Blanche presided over an abdication of the Department of Justice’s core duties. In the case of Trump v. Internal Revenue Service, the court found that Blanche failed to defend the government, instead orchestrating a settlement that funneled $1.776 billion in taxpayer funds into an 'Anti-Weaponization Fund' while unilaterally granting immunity to the President and his family. The judge labeled these proceedings 'risible' and referred the matter to the New York State Bar for potential disciplinary action.

GLOW President Omri Marian characterized the Senate's decision as an endorsement of misconduct, noting that Blanche’s record includes the suppression of civil rights investigations and the retaliatory firing of career officials. The organization specifically criticized Republican senators John Cornyn and Thom Tillis, who previously labeled Blanche’s actions disqualifying, yet ultimately voted to confirm him after receiving limited, reversible concessions. With his new authority, Blanche now oversees the very institution he is accused of weaponizing for personal and political interests.
