Baoding’s Industrial Pivot: From Traditional Craft to Global Markets

Inland on the North China Plain, Baoding is reframing its economic identity by tethering centuries-old craftsmanship to modern global trade. By scaling local specialties like Quyang carving and Baigou luggage manufacturing into international supply chains, the city has transformed from a regional hub into a significant player in the global export market.

The city’s economic shift relies on a dual-track strategy: preserving historical artisanal sectors while aggressively integrating into the green energy and sustainable building markets. In Quyang, a two-millennium-old carving tradition now operates as a high-efficiency cluster covering design through to international logistics. Meanwhile, Baigou has evolved over forty years into a manufacturing powerhouse, distributing luggage to over 200 countries and regions.

This industrial restructuring was the focus of a recent visit by journalists from Eurasian and Arab nations. The delegation toured production lines and corporate exhibition halls to observe how the city sustains its county-level economic vitality. By prioritizing industrial upgrading toward greener, high-end production, Baoding aims to prove that inland cities can maintain a resilient and open economic structure despite lacking coastal advantages.
