Delaware Memorial Bridge to Undergo Major Joint Replacement

Starting September 7, 2026, the Delaware River and Bay Authority will initiate a critical infrastructure project on the New Jersey-bound span of the Delaware Memorial Bridge. The work, which involves replacing 46 bridge joints, will enforce significant traffic pattern shifts and lane closures through November 24.

Contractor UHPC Solutions North America LLC will lead the effort to replace 24 expansion joints and 22 relief joints. The project incorporates specialized Ultra High-Performance Concrete to ensure the bridge's structural integrity against temperature-induced movement and heavy traffic loads. According to DRBA Chief Engineer David Hoppenjans, these upgrades are vital for the long-term safety and performance of the structure.

To accommodate the work, the two right lanes of the northbound span will face continuous 24/7 closures. To mitigate congestion, a barrier-separated bypass lane will be established on the southbound span. This lane is reserved exclusively for passenger vehicles heading toward the New Jersey Turnpike or US Route 40. Commercial vehicles, including tractor-trailers and buses, are prohibited from using the bypass and must remain in the two open lanes of the northbound structure. Drivers heading toward local exits like US-130 or RT-49 must also stay on the main northbound span, as the bypass offers no access to these locations. Authorities expect delays during peak commuting hours and advise motorists to plan for additional travel time.
