Two percent. That is the remarkably low likelihood of unexpected repairs for top-tier passenger cars like the Kia Rio and Toyota Camry, according to new data from CARFAX. The rankings highlight a clear trend: smaller, less complex machines consistently outperform their larger counterparts in repair frequency. While the average likelihood of an unexpected repair sits at 5.5% for cars, 7.8% for SUVs, and 9.1% for trucks, the top performers in each category operate well below those benchmarks.

In the SUV segment, the Honda CR-V, Kia Sportage, and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross lead the pack with repair risks under 2.5%. For truck enthusiasts, the Ford Ranger, Nissan Frontier, and Toyota Tacoma dominate, all maintaining an unexpected repair rate below 4%. CARFAX Chief Product Officer Paul Nadjarian noted that this shift toward data-driven transparency helps consumers navigate the complexities of the used-vehicle market, which is currently saturated with 2019–2023 models.

This reliability data is now integrated directly into the company's VIN-specific reports. By evaluating long-term repair histories, the platform aims to provide a predictive look at maintenance costs over a three-year horizon, allowing buyers to move beyond anecdotal evidence when selecting their next vehicle.
