Economists had anticipated a reading of 25.0, making the actual result of 47.4 a significant surprise for markets. The Philadelphia Fed noted that the diffusion index for current general activity jumped from 41.4 in July, driven primarily by a robust hiring surge. The employment index climbed 18 points to 27.9, reaching its highest level since April 2022, while the average workweek index also saw a marked improvement to 26.5.
Despite the broader manufacturing strength, the report highlighted a cooling in inflationary pressures. Both prices paid and prices received indexes declined to their lowest readings since February. However, sentiment regarding the future remains highly optimistic. The diffusion index for future general activity reached 73.6—the highest mark since August 1983—with 75 percent of surveyed firms anticipating growth over the coming six months. Following the release, spot gold traded at $4,470.09 per ounce, paring earlier losses.
