National Press Club Condemns Pentagon Ouster of Stars and Stripes Editor

Pentagon leadership has fired Stars and Stripes editor Erik Slavin, a move the National Press Club warns constitutes a direct assault on journalistic independence. The dismissal follows a pattern of heightened oversight and internal resignations, signaling a shift toward turning the military news outlet into an official propaganda vehicle.

National Press Club President Mark Schoeff Jr. demanded an immediate reversal of the firing, characterizing the decision as a brazen attempt by the Department of Defense to dictate military coverage. The move follows the departure of publisher Max Lederer, who resigned citing fundamental disagreements with current Pentagon leadership. Lederer received a separation notice from the agency on the same day as the editor's termination.

This personnel shakeup highlights a broader campaign to erode editorial integrity within the organization. In April, the Pentagon removed the publication's ombudsman, a position created by Congress to ensure independent oversight. These actions, combined with a March directive imposing strict content constraints, suggest that defense officials are prioritizing controlled narratives over the independent reporting service members have relied on for over 150 years. The National Press Club maintains that treating the outlet as a mouthpiece for official talking points undermines the trust of military personnel stationed globally.
